If you’re not a skier or your legs are sore after a few days of skiing hard, there are a handful of great things to do in Snowmass off the mountain. Krabloonik has been dubbed the best “off-slope activity” in the Aspen/Snowmass area, and anyone who has spent a day dog sledding with Krabloonik would agree! For 30 years Krabloonik has offered a blend of fine dining and winter adventure. There are 200 sled dogs on-site that have been bred to pull sleds just like they do in Alaska. Krabloonik’s Colorado dog sledding tours are available from late November through April, and include a special lunch or dinner at their delicious restaurant. Morning, afternoon, and twilight dog sled tours are available, and the experience of winding through the forest powered by sled dogs is an unforgettable memory.
Two other great outdoor things to do in Snowmass include the daily snowshoe tours and the terrific cross-country skiing. The snowshoe tours give people a chance to explore the Rocky Mountains, the winding creeks, and the dense Aspen groves at their own pace. Included in the tour are a chairlift ride, hot drink and snack, and guide.
The cross-country skiing track at the Snowmass Club is a perfectly groomed course with trails for all levels and abilities of cross-country skiing. The scenic rolling trails have incredible views of Mount Daly, and there are challenging tracks for experienced cross-country skiers looking for a workout. The Snowmass Cross Country Centeris the place to go for information and rentals.
The Ice Age Discovery Center is another must-see in Snowmass Mall. In 2010, the remains of several dozen pre-historic animals, most notably the ‘Snowmass mammoth,’ were discovered at the base of Snowmass Mountain. The excavation sent ripples throughout the world. Scientists and amateurs alike were ecstatic to learn about the archaeological site, which is said to be the biggest find since the world-famous La Brea Tar Pits. The Ice Age Discovery Center, located in the Snowmass Mall, is the spot to learn more about the ancient giants that used to populate the Snowmass area.
